In 2012, while working for GREE in San Francisco, I traveled to Tokyo at least once a month. GREE is a mobile game company in Tokyo, Japan, that was expanding and creating its own distribution platform. During my time at GREE, I worked on two main projects: a social platform communication mobile app and a chat mobile app for GREE games, both iOS, and Android native.
The communication and interaction platform application was called Tellit (テリット), and when completed, it had the same functions as most similar apps available today, such as calling, stickers, filters, multi-chat, etc. For Tellit, I created the app logo and overall UI style, along with a design system including custom icons. In the initial stages, I created multiple micro-interaction prototypes and hi-fi wireframes to deliberate direction. For prototyping interactions and animations, I relied on Keynote.
Tellit was an important learning experience for me as I traveled back and forth between San Francisco and Tokyo. The front-end iOS and Android developers were in Tokyo, while the back-end and logic were done in Amsterdam, so the development sprints were driven by European developers. Interacting with three time zones and working remotely with three large teams of product designers and developers solidified my personal work process.
The second app was built alongside the GREE subsidiary company called POKELABO. This was a dedicated game chat app, and a complete rebranding was necessary. Therefore, a lot of exploration went into action to match the look and feel of the company and differentiate it from competitors.
